About Me
A resident of Nova Scotia for 37 years, Paulette Melanson grew up in the village of Scoudouc, New Brunswick. Her father as well as her aunt on her mother's side were artistic. Although the visual arts had been close to her heart since childhood, Paulette decided to pursue secondary studies in science at the Université de Moncton, B.Sc. 1975. Paulette moved to Nova Scotia in 1985 to learn more about her Acadian ancestors and to pursue studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 1990, she graduated from Dalhousie University with an M.Ed. In 2002, she discovered that she was a direct descendant of Charles Melanson and Marie Dugas, founders of Melanson Settlement in 1664 near Port-Royal and that Pierre Melanson (Charles' brother) and his wife Marguerite Mius d'Entremont were the founders of Grand Pré.
“By knowing more about the history of my people, I have become very attached to Nova Scotia. Finally, for the first time in my life, I could better understand my habits, my family experiences, that is, my culture - the history of our people that we never learned in school or at home."
“My artistic approach reflects my heritage, my life experience, what I see, what I feel and my deep love of nature. I work mainly in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. My works include landscapes and abstract paintings inspired by my Acadian heritage as well as the environment where I reside (southern NS and Grand Pré during the summer).”
